Workplace audiometry Noise at work surveys UK-wide

Find the threshold. Before the noise does.

On-site hearing tests and noise surveys for UK employers working to the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005. Every test produces a record; every survey produces a report you can put in the file.

Reports included · 25+ years in acoustic consultancy

01 · Hearing

Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 · reg. 9

A hearing test is a graph of a person.

Audiometry measures the quietest tone a person can hear at a set of fixed frequencies, one ear at a time. The result is plotted as hearing level in dB HL against frequency in hertz — a line that can be compared with the same person's line next year.

That comparison is the point. A single test is a snapshot; a baseline and a repeat test turn it into a trend, and a trend is what tells an employer whether noise controls are working.

Who needs one

Employees regularly exposed at or above the upper exposure action value — 85 dB(A) — and anyone a risk assessment identifies as at risk. The duty sits with the employer, not the employee.

02 · Noise at work

Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 · regs. 4–10

Three numbers decide what an employer must do.

UK noise law is built on action values. Cross one and a duty starts. They are daily or weekly personal exposure levels, A-weighted, averaged across the working day.

  1. Lower action value

    80dB(A)

    Daily or weekly exposure

    • Make hearing protection available on request.
    • Provide information, instruction and training.
    • Assess the risk and reduce exposure so far as reasonably practicable.
  2. Upper action value

    85dB(A)

    Daily or weekly exposure

    • Mark hearing protection zones — protection must be worn.
    • Reduce exposure by other means so far as reasonably practicable.
    • Provide health surveillance, including audiometry, where the risk assessment requires it.
  3. Exposure limit value

    87dB(A)

Not an action value — a ceiling

    • Must not be exceeded, taking hearing protection into account.
    • If it is, act immediately to bring exposure back below it.

Peak values run alongside: 135 dB(C) at the lower action value, 137 dB(C) at the upper, 140 dB(C) at the limit.

03 · Compliance

The service · what you end up holding

The part that goes in the file.

Two services, one paper trail. Both are delivered on your site, and both come with a written report covering results, risk and the compliance guidance that follows.

  1. 01

    Workplace audiometry

On-site hearing tests for your employees, run in a quiet room at your premises. Results are recorded per employee and summarised for the employer.

    Audiometry
  2. 02

    Noise at work surveys

Measurement of workplace noise to establish daily exposure levels and show where they sit against the action values — and what that means for controls and protection.

  3. 03

    Report writing

Every service includes a written report: the findings, the risk analysis, and the guidance that shows due diligence to a regulator or an insurer.

04 · On site

A morning, a quiet room, a record per person

One room. One ear at a time.

  1. 01

    Scope

Tell us the site, the headcount and the shift pattern. We agree a date and what the visit needs to cover.

  2. 02

    Set up

We need a quiet room, away from production noise where possible, and a list of who is being tested.

  3. 03

    Test

Each employee is tested one ear at a time. Appointments are scheduled around shifts so the line keeps running.

  4. 04

    Report

Results are written up with the compliance guidance, and the records stay with you for the next round.

05 · Why us
